No access: New Jersey bans large trucks from state highways

In the continuing battle pitting trucks against neighborhoods, including local crackdowns on noise, diesel pollutants, increased tolls, and size and weight restrictions, New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman in late July took the unprecedented move of banning large trucks from state highways. The Garden State's bold advance could empower other states to do the same, especially if the temporary ban becomes permanent, which seems likely. Whitman's emergency ban ends September 14, and state regulators have begun a rulemaking to carve it in stone.
